Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Drew took a week off work when Amelia was three weeks old and we tried to do some fun things keeping in mind that Amelia is not supposed to be around crowds yet.  We packed a picnic lunch and took a day trip up to Golden Gate Canyon State Park.  It was a great place to go as we pretty much had the place to ourselves and Claire loved going on a little “adventure!”

First Bath

Amelia loved her first bath.  She just sat in the water very content.  I wasn’t sure how it would go as I remember Claire screaming for her entire first bath but Amelia really seems to like sitting in the water.  She has enjoyed all her baths since.  The fist bath, Claire was not around for but since then Claire has been LOVING to help give “Milna” baths.  It is one of her favorite things to help with!

First Days at Home

Amelia is a sweet, sweet baby!  She is super content and doesn’t fuss too much.  She also doesn’t seem to have allergies like Claire had.  I am trying not to be overly optimistic because anything could still happen but, fingers crossed, we aren’t going to have the eating issues we had with Claire.  We already are so happy that Amelia doesn’t cry non stop like Claire did!  It is a completely different experience.  She eats REALLY well and not even four weeks later she has gained 1 pound 11 ounces bringing her currently to 7 pounds 11 ounces.

We are only having one issue with Amelia.  I took her to the doctor a couple weeks ago because she sounded so congested and was having trouble breathing.  For two weeks we tried all the remedies they gave us (saline drops, sleeping upright, steaming up the bathroom, etc) and nothing seemed to be helping.  It just seemed to be getting worse and she was having so much trouble sleeping.  I took her back to the doctor yesterday and it turns out the cartilage in her nose hasn’t completely hardened so since it is still soft it basically collapses in on itself when she gets worked up.  The doctor said it will fix itself because it hardens between 9-12 months.  So we will be dealing with this for a while and have to be really careful if she picks up a cold because this condition combined with a clogged nose could be bad.  Always something!!  Claire was in her own room by the time she was three weeks old but since Amelia is having so much trouble breathing when she sleeps we have decided to keep her in our room.  Right now she is sleeping on the diaper changer in between us.  She usually only gets up once to eat in the middle of the night (between 2-3am) and then again between 6-7am.  This is GREAT since Claire was up every two hours on the dot!  EXCEPT, it takes an hour to feed her and then 1-2 hours to get her back down.  I usually take her until about 4ish and then when I can barely stay awake any longer I wake up Drew for a turn.  By this point she is almost ready to go back down so he doesn’t usually have to stay up more than a half hour (lucky!!)

Claire is having a bit of trouble adjusting.  She has her moments where she hits or kicks at Amelia.  It is really scary.  We can’t trust her alone with Amelia at all.  But she also has her really sweet big sister moments.  She LOVES to get out all the diaper changing supplies and help give baths.  She does want to do everything the baby does.  If I get out the boppy to start feeding Amelia, Claire will hop up in my lap, lay in the boppy and say “no feed baby!”  I did get her a “nursing basket” with several new toys in it to play with while Amelia eats.  She loves the Mr. Potato Head!!  Anyone out there with a 2.5 year old needs to get one!  The hardest thing is not being able to pick Claire up.  She understands that I have a “boo boo” on my tummy that has to heal but it breaks my heart not to be able to scoop her up in my arms.  I think that things will start getting better in terms of how she treats Amelia once I am able to love on her more.

Amelia’s first two days at home every two hours we had to take her out and “sun” her for 15 minutes to get her bilirubin down:

Big Sister

Claire was able to have some fun while we were in the hospital.  It was a team effort between both grandparents and Leenie but I don’t think Claire even knew we were gone!

Claire took a trip up to Ft. Collins:

She went to gymnastics:

And hung out around the house:

Since Amelia came early we even got to celebrate Drew’s 29th birthday at home instead of in the hospital.  We had a steak dinner and chocolate lava cakes for dessert.  It was very low key but I think he had a nice time:

The Arrival of Amelia

Thursday, July 18th
6 lbs
19.5 in
Amelia Grace Aschman

When I woke up Wednesday morning I started thinking back to when Claire was born.  This is the exact day gestation that I had gone into labor with Claire and she arrived the following afternoon.  I wondered if I would be so lucky again to have the baby early.  Well it appears my uterus does not like inhabitants after this date because by the evening I was pretty sure I was in the early stages of labor.  I was having contractions every 15-20 minutes and they were pretty strong.  Drew went to bed with no problems (what a surprise) but my contractions hurt so bad I couldn’t sleep.  So I stayed up – all night.  At around 3:45 am I noticed some blood when I went to the bathroom and I knew for sure that I was in labor.  I called the doctor and she told me to come on it and it sounded like we would be doing my c-section first thing in the morning.  We called my parents and asked them to head down so someone would be here with Claire.  It was 6am when we finally walked into the hospital since we had to wait for my parents and finish packing our hospital bag.  (Oh, and Drew insisted on stopping by the Starbucks drive through thinking it was going to be a long day).

Pardon the dazed look (remember I had been up all night) but this is the last picture of me pregnant!  Walking into the hospital!

When the nurse was walking me up to the maternity wing she told me that every room was full at the moment so they were going to put me in the triage room to make sure I was in labor.  I was hooked up to the fetal monitor and by 6:20 she brought in an IV and said that I was staying.  I told Drew to run out to the car and grab the camera bag.  At 6:40, while Drew was out at the car, the nurse came in and said I was scheduled for my c-section at 7:30 am.  EEEEK, that was only 50 minutes away!  Now the nerves started to set in.  I was about to have major surgery but I was also about to meet my little baby.  It was such a wonderful thing that we didn’t know the sex of the baby because the excitement of that was the only thing holding me together.

DSC_4575 DSC_4576 DSC_4577

I got all prepped for surgery and was wheeled into the OR where they gave me my spinal and sent Drew and my mom in.  At this point the nerves were at bay (the spinal hadn’t paralyzed me – I wiggled my feet immediately to check!) and I knew it would only be a few more minutes until we met either Amelia Grace or Bennett Robert.  I was bummed that they wouldn’t let Drew take a video this time but at least my mind was much more clear that I actually remember this delivery on my own!  My doctor was out of town but I really liked Dr. Christensen who ended up delivering for me.  I was so excited when she said, “alright dad, what is it?” To which Drew replied, “It’s a girl!!”  I was so excited, I just wanted to see her but they immediately took her to the side to towel her off and do her apgar assessment (she was an 8).  Drew got to stand over with her and watch but it seemed like an eternity before they brought her over to me.  I got to hold her on my chest for about 5 minutes before they took her off to the nursery for her bath.

DSC_4623 DSC_4622

Drew went with her and my mom stayed with me.  The worst part of the whole thing was while they were stitching me up my arms started shaking uncontrollably.  They said it was because of all the hormones.  The next hour or so is pretty foggy for me.  I don’t really remember finishing up in the OR or being taken back to the triage room (still no actual rooms available) but I do remember when Drew brought her back from the nursery and I finally got to really take her in!  She, of course, was perfect!

Still waiting for Drew and Amelia to come back.  I was starving but all they would let me have were ice chips and a popsicle!

The first day she seemed like such a stranger to me.  Who was this new little creature?  But by the second day I was so enamored with her.  I could just hold her for hours.  I have continued to fall more and more in love each day.  Her little expressions constantly make me laugh!

Big sister came up to meet her Thursday evening and Amelia was so thoughtful, she had bought some presents for her!  Claire calls her “Milna”

Claire was pretty unsure of her and was happy to just look…

We tried to let Claire hold her but Amelia started crying and it scared Claire!

The hospital stay was pretty uneventful.  The only issue we had was with her billirubin levels.  They cleared to an acceptable level a couple days after we got home with some sunning outside.  While we were in the hospital  we had visits from Grandma and Papa, Grammy and Pap, Leenie, and of course big sister Claire.  We were there from Thursday the 18th to Monday the 22nd.  It was good to finally leave!

Lastly, these are my beautiful earrings that Amelia got for me.  I love them and can’t wait to get out of the house and wear them!!

Last Weekend as an “Only”

Claire should have had one more weekend to be an only child but the weekend that turned out to be her last was perfect!!  We had such a good time hanging out with our numero uno!  Check out what all we did!

Saturday morning we headed over to Sloan’s Lake to feed the ducks and geese.  Claire had never done this before but we had a lot of old bread and Colleen suggested this.  Boy it was a good idea, Claire thought it was so much fun!

Then, of course, she wanted to play at the park for a few minutes:

Sunday we headed over to the Botanic Gardens and Alexander met us to play!  We played in the children’s garden stream for a long time then headed over to the main gardens for a picnic lunch.  These two just always have a blast together!

Bathroom Remodel

It took FOREVER, but we managed to get the bathroom done before the baby arrived.  HALLELUJAH!!!  We are really happy with how it turned out.  Drew worked so hard on it and had lots of helpers.  Thanks to everyone that helped him get it done.  We couldn’t have completed it without everyone’s help.  We had the counters and tile done professionally but everything else Drew worked on.

38 Weeks

Little do I know, but this will be my last week pregnant!!  Which is good because I am really uncomfortable and not sleeping AT ALL.  I can not hold Claire because my belly gets in the way and every move I make is painful.

I know everyone is probably looking forward to hearing about the arrival of Baby A but we need to rewind for a few posts to catch up on everything that happened prior!

Even “Rock N Roll Princesses” need their milk:

Drew’s parents (aka Grammy and Pap) bought Claire a leotard to wear to gymnastics.  She is quite proud of it and every time she puts it on she walks around with her arms in the air saying “TA-DA!!”

And just a random shot of my sweetie.  We had to leave the park in just a diaper the other day because someone found a mud puddle and thought it was awfully fun to run through!!!
