First Days at Home

Amelia is a sweet, sweet baby!  She is super content and doesn’t fuss too much.  She also doesn’t seem to have allergies like Claire had.  I am trying not to be overly optimistic because anything could still happen but, fingers crossed, we aren’t going to have the eating issues we had with Claire.  We already are so happy that Amelia doesn’t cry non stop like Claire did!  It is a completely different experience.  She eats REALLY well and not even four weeks later she has gained 1 pound 11 ounces bringing her currently to 7 pounds 11 ounces.

We are only having one issue with Amelia.  I took her to the doctor a couple weeks ago because she sounded so congested and was having trouble breathing.  For two weeks we tried all the remedies they gave us (saline drops, sleeping upright, steaming up the bathroom, etc) and nothing seemed to be helping.  It just seemed to be getting worse and she was having so much trouble sleeping.  I took her back to the doctor yesterday and it turns out the cartilage in her nose hasn’t completely hardened so since it is still soft it basically collapses in on itself when she gets worked up.  The doctor said it will fix itself because it hardens between 9-12 months.  So we will be dealing with this for a while and have to be really careful if she picks up a cold because this condition combined with a clogged nose could be bad.  Always something!!  Claire was in her own room by the time she was three weeks old but since Amelia is having so much trouble breathing when she sleeps we have decided to keep her in our room.  Right now she is sleeping on the diaper changer in between us.  She usually only gets up once to eat in the middle of the night (between 2-3am) and then again between 6-7am.  This is GREAT since Claire was up every two hours on the dot!  EXCEPT, it takes an hour to feed her and then 1-2 hours to get her back down.  I usually take her until about 4ish and then when I can barely stay awake any longer I wake up Drew for a turn.  By this point she is almost ready to go back down so he doesn’t usually have to stay up more than a half hour (lucky!!)

Claire is having a bit of trouble adjusting.  She has her moments where she hits or kicks at Amelia.  It is really scary.  We can’t trust her alone with Amelia at all.  But she also has her really sweet big sister moments.  She LOVES to get out all the diaper changing supplies and help give baths.  She does want to do everything the baby does.  If I get out the boppy to start feeding Amelia, Claire will hop up in my lap, lay in the boppy and say “no feed baby!”  I did get her a “nursing basket” with several new toys in it to play with while Amelia eats.  She loves the Mr. Potato Head!!  Anyone out there with a 2.5 year old needs to get one!  The hardest thing is not being able to pick Claire up.  She understands that I have a “boo boo” on my tummy that has to heal but it breaks my heart not to be able to scoop her up in my arms.  I think that things will start getting better in terms of how she treats Amelia once I am able to love on her more.

Amelia’s first two days at home every two hours we had to take her out and “sun” her for 15 minutes to get her bilirubin down:
