First Day of Preschool and 2.5 Year Old Update

My little girl is growing up!!  She started preschool two mornings a week at the beginning of September.  She goes Monday/Wednesday from 9-11:30.  Her school is Kids Discovery Days and is about 10 minutes from our house and is a co-op.  We love it!  Since it is a co-op we have to volunteer in her classroom and bring snack once a month.  I had my first volunteer day last week and it was so much fun.  I was amazed at how nicely the kids interacted together.  Claire loves the other little girl in her class, Mae.  They wanted to hold hands and sit by each other for every activity!

Her school has a couple sessions of free play time, arts and crafts, snack, outdoor play, music class, and circle time.  They fit a lot into those 2.5 hours!  She has only been going for 3 weeks now and drop off is still an issue.  She cries every time!  Her teacher, Ms. Suzanne, says she calms down within 20 minutes.  She is always smiling by the time I pick her up and says she wants to go back!  I think one of her favorite things about school is her new doggy backpack (that she picked out).

She also got to go to the store and pick out an entire new outfit for the first day.  The shoes are a funny story.  The week before we had all gone to the shoe store so Drew and Colleen could buy some new tennies.  We told Claire she was going to get some new shoes soon too.  She talked about it non stop until I finally got her to Nordstrom.  On the way there, she said she wanted “bike-e” shoes.  It took me a minute to figure out she was saying she wanted Nike’s like Dad and Leenie got!!  She did end up with her own pair of “bike-e’s”

She is getting really good at singing her ABCs.  She also really likes to sing Happy Birthday.  One of the highlights of my 30th was Claire saying “Happy Birthday Mommy” with no prompting!  We will hear her in her room singing one of the aforementioned songs, she loves to belt out a tune!  Other favorites include: Baa Baa Black Sheep, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, and Take me out to the Ball Game.  This summer we worked a lot on counting to 10 and our ABCs.  It is really cute because most of the time her alphabet goes “A,B,C,D,E,F,G, 8 (which sounds like H), 9, 10, 7, 8, 9, 10.”  Her numbers are 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 7, 8, 9, 10!  She wins on consistency!

Her mastery of the English language has grown leaps and bounds.  She says the funniest things!!  She is starting to use pronouns but still gets them mixed up “daddy hold you.”  She also really likes using probably, maybe, and actually.  “actually get three books” “mommy probably get milk.”  She has also picked up “Claire drive mom CRAZY” or “Claire nuts” or “Silsy (silly) momma”

She still is refusing to potty train.  We try to get her to sit on the potty all the time but she just refuses.  She definitely is aware enough to start.  She will tell you when she has a wet diaper.  Or she will walk over to a corner and I will ask her what she is going to do.  (Waving her hand) “Go away Mama, poopin'” Followed quickly by “new diaper mama.”  She likes to take her own diaper off and pull the wipe out and wipe.  Then roll the diaper up and, if she has a pull up, put the new diaper on herself to.  Ya, this kid should be ready to potty train.  She is SO stubborn though.  I have tried keeping her diaper off because I had heard that if they don’t have a diaper on they are more willing to go on the potty.  She will throw a complete tantrum to get a new diaper when she needs to go and absolutely refuse to try to go in the potty.  Then as soon as you put her in a diaper she will pee and request a clean one!

She has recently became very interested in Princesses.  She picked out a princess dress at Costco for her Halloween outfit this year and insists on wearing it (with crown and wand) everyday.  I will be very surprised if the costume makes it to Halloween.  It has already gotten ripped.

Claire goes to bed between 8-9:30 (goal is 8, doesn’t always happen) and wakes up between 6:45-8:30.  She takes one nap.  We try to have her in her room by 1:30-2 where we read some books and sing songs.  After we leave she usually plays for a half hour to an hour before falling asleep and sleeping from 3-5.  This would be a nice time for exhausted mom to sneak in a nap but Amelia has a complete opposite schedule.  She naps all morning and then wakes up around 1 and is ready to play.  UGH

Eating is still hit or miss.  If she is hungry and in the mood for what you have served she eats great.  Otherwise, not so much.  Lunch is her worst meal, dinner her best.  Breakfast depends on the day.  Vanilla yogurt is the usual no fail item to serve.  She still loves french fries more than anything, with the exception of ice cream.

She has all of her teeth in, getting her last two molars in August.

Moods have been challenging these days.  If she is in an un-agreeable mood you better watch out!  She will refuse to do anything you ask and scream/whine/cry nonstop.  Nothing seems to make her happy when she gets to this point.  I have to put her in time out until she can calm herself down.  The terrible twos are aptly named.  The toddler stage is extremely exhausting and trying.

Some Claire funnies:

Pointing to Amelia’s new paci clip – “pretty cool paci”

Mom asks Claire if she wants milk.  Response: “No, princess wants milk!”

Pointing to the dent in the back of the car “uh oh, daddy take keys” (I had jokingly said the day before that Drew was going to take my keys away since I have had two accidents in four months)

If Amelia is crying: “I know, I know, mommy pick you up” or “its okay milna, mommy feed you”

Out to lunch with Leenie, Claire gets in a mood and starts biting the table.  Colleen tells her to stop because the table is dirty so she decides to bite Colleen.  When she is told that was not nice she says, “Sorry Leenie, sorry table”

When asked if she has a poopy diaper, “no, not yet”

Alexander’s 3rd Birthday

The day after Tour de Fat, we headed back over to the City Park area for Alexander’s third birthday.  I can not believe he is three.  These kiddos are growing up much to fast!

Tour de Fat

We went to New Belgium Breweries Tour de Fat again this year.  We only stayed a couple hours this time.  It was really hot and I was worried about having a 7 week old out in the 90+ degree heat for too long.

The highlight of the day for me was watching Claire get her face painted for the first time.  (Getting the face paint off the next two days was not so fun though)

2 Months Young

Amelia’s second month had some highs and lows.  She is still the sweetest little baby ever so mostly highs but we stared to have food issues.  Around 5 weeks she broke out in a sandpaper rash all over her face, scalp, and tops of her chest and back.  She was having a lot of gas and explosive, mucousy stools and was very congested.  Then she started throwing up (not spitting up) most of her meals which lead to her just refusing to eat.  It was so sad.  We made the decision at 7 weeks to switch her to formula for a week and clear my breast milk of dairy (the number one culprit of food issues in little ones).  Her rash mostly cleared up on the formula and all the other issues disappeared.  We put her back on breast milk three days ago and so far, so good.  The first day she threw up a couple of times and had a lot of gas but she seems to be back adjusted to it now.  Her rash is still not completely cleared up but it hasn’t gotten any worse.  I have read it can take 2-3 weeks for your milk to completely clear so cross your fingers for us that this works.  I already don’t eat gluten, now no diary.  It could be anything but common other culprits would be eggs, soy, or nuts.  Or if she has a protein intolerance like Claire did breast feeding will just never work.  I am cautiously optimistic at this point though.  She isn’t eating as well as I would like but I am really hoping we can keep her on breast milk.  In fact, I am having a lot of trouble getting her to eat at the breast at all.  I am mainly having to pump and give her a bottle.  🙁

Amelia smiled for the first time at 7 weeks.  Of course, we think it is the most precious little grin!!

She had her 8 week check up and got her first round of vaccinations.  So sad for momma and baby to go through that.  She actually got pretty sick from them and was vomiting all night.  You could feel her stomach heaving.  She had a fever was was very pale.  I just hated seeing her little body going through that.  She is growing like a weed though:

Height: 22 3/4 in – 78 percentile
Weight: 10 lbs 9 0z – 44 percentile
Head Circumference: 14.5 in – 20 percentile

Barring any sickness, we don’t go back until four months.  She will have to get another round of shots then and I hope she doesn’t get so sick.  I am convinced there is nothing worse than watching your child suffer.

She is starting to transition to her 3-6 month clothes.  Newborn pants are too small and tops are snug but still wearable.  This was the opposite of Claire who always grew out of tops first and bottoms later!

Amelia is still sleeping in our room.  She has had a lot of congestion and the doctor recommended having her sleep upright in her car seat.  So she sleeps right in between us in her seat.  I know Drew is anxious to get her moved into her own room but I am just not ready!  I really like having her right by me.  This was completely opposite as with Claire.  We had her in her room and crib by the time she was two weeks.  I don’t know if it is because I know this is my last baby and I want to cherish every second or that I have changed and am much more motherly then I was 2.5 years ago.  Maybe a combination of them both.  Amelia is an excellent sleeper.  She only wakes up once during the night sometime between 2:30-4 and then sleeps through till 6-7:30 in the morning.  Don’t get me wrong, we are still exhausted around here but it is much better than Claire’s every two hours on the dot.  Right now we feed her last sometime between 11pm-12am.  Her feedings typically take an hour because she insists on lots of breaks!

Claire is slowly coming around to her little sister.  We have much less kicking, hitting, and derogatory comments.  Instead she says sweet and funny things daily.  My favorite is when she says “Claire love Milna, baby sistah” and gives her a kiss on the forehead.  She has also said “Milna real cute.”  She likes to talk about how baby came out of mommies tummy and mommies tummy is “no big” anymore.  She still loves to help give Amelia baths and likes to feed and change her baby doll when I am working with Amelia.  Really Claire likes to be involved in anything I am doing.  A constant shadow!

A little update:

In the three days it has taken me to get this post done we had to take Amelia to the doctor.  She just really was not eating at all.  It had been 9 days since her 8 week check up and she had only gained 2 oz (they like babies to be gaining 1-2 oz per day).  So, we go back next week to check her weight.  We are really hoping she is gaining again!

A New Decade

Last month I ushered in a new decade and celebrated the big 3-0 in style.  We did so much fun stuff!!  I got several days worth of celebrating (just the way I like it).

The weekend before my birthday we all went up to Georgetown.  My dad fried up some catfish and Colleen made fried veggies and an awesome sparkling blueberry lemonade (one for the adults and one for Claire).  Anytime an alcoholic beverage is served, Claire asks for a “special juice.”  I think she just likes the pretty colors of our drinks and wants one too!!  She gets so excited about it though!!

Grandma and her favorite little girls!!

IMG_5240

The night before my birthday, Colleen made AH-MAZING crab cakes, remoulade, and pea and pancetta risotto.  It was to die for!!!  Have I mentioned that Colleen is a gourmet chef and makes mouthwatering meals like this for us several times a week?!  (No, you can’t have her!!)  I am going to do a food post soon with some of her recipes because they are too good to not document.  I’ll add the recipe for this dish at that time.  We also opened up one of our special Sonoma wines that we bought when we were out there for our anniversary.  So fun!!

DSC_5017

Now the day of my actual birthday arrived.  Colleen was off work so we ran a couple errands and went to lunch at Hacienda Colorado with the girls.  That was quite an experience.  It was one of the first times we had taken Amelia to a restaurant.  During lunch, she decided she was hungry so I whipped out the new “hooter hider,” aka nursing cover, and she went to town.  Well, she always needs a diaper change after she eats.  I was being lazy and did not want to take her into the bathroom because I didn’t want to get up and I think those changing tables are disgusting.  I had her car seat so I thought I would just change her in that because it would hide her from the other patrons who probably didn’t want to see a diaper change during their lunch.  Her bottom was straight up in the air, just prime position for getting some gas out, when she explodes with poo.  All over the birthday girl.  I am trying to wipe everything up when explosion number two (of more number two) occurs.  Colleen was laughing hysterically and you can imagine what a mess I was.  I walked out of the restaurant with my head down as fast as I could.  We did get our lunch for free though so that was great.  Not because they felt sorry for the poop stained birthday girl but because they forgot our order and it took over 45 minutes to get our food.  Oh well.

After lunch, my parents came down to watch the girls and Colleen took me out for a pedicure.  That was an experience too.  We had asked for “spa pedi’s” but they didn’t hear us or something because when we reminded them they broke out in a flurry of some Asian language talking across the whole saloon.  Then one of the women, rudely, yells over to us, “you no ask for spa pedicure, we no have time!”  At this point everyone in the place is staring at us since we had apparently caused quite an uproar.  We told them it was fine since we didn’t want to make a scene and then they said, “well, we do one of you.”  Ummm, no thanks?!  We came together!  Needless to say we didn’t get our spa pedi’s but we still had a relaxing time and laughed about it the whole way home.

Drew was taking off work early that day and the plan was for him to take me out for drinks and then sushi.  I had a really upset stomach though so I just wanted to lay down for a while when I got home and not do drinks.  Little did I know I was foiling all of him and Colleen’s plans for a surprise party!!  They kept calm and didn’t let on.  I actually had no idea about it until Drew and I were driving to the restaurant.  Then there were just a string of weird things and I started to wonder.  Why was Colleen getting ready when we left?  Why was Drew taking a round about way to the restaurant?  Why did Drew “forget” his wallet and have to go home?  And then when we got home, why was Colleen’s car gone?  Why did Drew not seemed bothered that we were going to be late for our reservation?  By the time we got to the restaurant I was pretty sure Drew was up to something but I didn’t want to say anything in case I was wrong!  We pulled up and I saw Colleen’s car – now I was sure.  Then we walk in and instead of sitting us in the main area they took us downstairs and “SURPRISE” our closest friends were their waiting for us.  We had a great dinner at Sushi Sasa followed by some salted caramel ice cream from Sweet Cow.  Then we went over to the Ale House and finished off our night with some drinks on the roof top patio!  Such a fun night.  I still consider it a successful surprise because I had no idea until a few minutes before we got there.  Had I not had the upset stomach and we had gone out for drinks as planned I never would have figured it out!!

IMG_0905

The weekend after my birthday we went up to Georgetown again for my final celebration.  My parents gift was a pontoon ride on Lake Dillon.  It was the perfect way to spend the day.  Everyone had so much fun and it was so relaxing for me.  I told my parents I think we should make it an August tradition!!  It was cold and rainy off and on that day but the weather didn’t stop us.  We just bundled up and took in the amazing views!

Sitting on Dad’s lap driving the boat – I’ll always be his little girl 🙂

We stopped on the way up at Whole Foods and got sandwich fixings and had lunch on board.  My aunt got me a birthday cake from my FAVORITE bakery.  Cake in Georgetown.  I thought she made the best cakes before I went Gluten Free.  She also does GF cakes and cupcakes and they are incredibly delicious too.  I thoroughly enjoyed my white on white cake with raspberry!!

Some time ago…

…these pictures were taken.

It is my goal this week to try to get caught up on my blog.  I am putting this in writing in hopes that it keeps me accountable because I have fun pictures to post.  Life with two is HECTIC!!!  I feel like I am busy from sun up to sun down with no time for anything.  If I have any spare time it usually involves eating, showering, or napping.

So these were taken 4 or 5 weeks ago, can’t remember exactly!

This was Amelia’s first meal out – Thai food that dad spilled on her while she was sleeping.  We were laughing about it and then Claire thought it would be funny to put noodles in her hair too.  She was cracking up about it.

Big Girl Fun

Since we couldn’t take Amelia out too much before she was six weeks old, Claire went on a lot of solo trips with dad and Leenie while mom stayed home with Amelia.  One day they biked down to Sloan’s lake and went to the dragon boat festival and fed the ducks.

Every once in a while, if we timed Amelia’s feedings just right, I would get to take Claire out for some fun.  Here she is enjoying one of our ice cream dates.  We usually go out for ice cream at Sweet Cow and they don’t use any artificial coloring in their products.  Claire had no idea how many colors ice cream could be.  She now always wants “blue” ice cream when we go out!!  What did I start??

Fun in the Sun

Our last fun family outing while Drew was off was to the lake.  Our neighbors parents own a private lake and they had us over for some fun in the sun.  Drew, Colleen, and Claire had fun kayaking, sliding, and just splashing in the water.  Amelia and I stayed in the shade on the shore and watched all the action!

New Park and Sunflower Farms

Our first picnic outing was such a success we decided to do it again while Drew was off.  We have needed to paint our garage door for a long time.  I ran into the bottom of it a while back and we had to have the panel replaced but the paint color we needed to get to match it to the rest of the garage was only available at one store all the way in Longmont.  We decided that we would just make a day out of it and drive up to get the paint.  On our way there we stopped at a park we found in Lafayette and ate a picnic lunch.  Then Claire and dad got in some good play time while I fed Amelia.

I am not sure who was having more fun:

After our fun lunch we headed to Longmont for the paint (as you will recall, this was the purpose of our trip.)   WELL, we got to the store and they were out of the base we needed!  WHAT LUCK!!  We made the best of the long drive though and made a quick stop by Sunflower Farms for Claire to play around:
